VAT payments and refunds
Record the VAT you pay to the FTA, or a refund you receive from it, against a filed return. Verasol books it through your bank and shows what is still open.
When you have filed a return and paid the VAT to the FTA, record the payment here. Verasol books it from your bank account against what you owe the FTA, and the return shows as paid. A refund from the FTA is recorded the same way. Only a filed return can be paid or refunded: the VAT you owe is booked when the return is marked as filed (see Prepare the VAT 201 return).
What the page shows#
Open VAT › VAT Payments in the main menu.
- 1 Record Payment records a payment or a refund.
- The cards show the Total VAT Due on the returns due in the chosen Year, the Total Paid in that year, and what all your filed returns leave open today: 2 Outstanding (VAT still to pay to the FTA) and 3 Refunds Pending (refunds the FTA still owes you).
- Each payment has a ⋮ menu. For a paid one: 4 Mark as unpaid (reverses the entry) and 5 Edit. For one that is not paid yet: Mark as Paid, Edit and Delete.
The list shows each payment's Period, the VAT Return it settles, the Due Date, Payment Date, Amount (a refund with a minus sign), the FTA Reference and the Status. Filter it by Year and Status.
You need the permission Tax: VAT and corporate tax (view) to see this page, and Tax: prepare and file returns, record tax payments to record payments.
Record a payment to the FTA#
- Click Record Payment.
- Leave Type on Payment to FTA.
- Choose the Related VAT Return: the filed return you are paying. Your opening VAT balance from before Verasol is in the list too.
- Choose the Bank account the money left from.
- Fill in the VAT return period (for example Q3 2026), the Due Date and the Payment Date.
- Enter the Amount (AED), the FTA Transaction Reference and the Payment Method (Bank Transfer, e-Dirham, Credit Card or Cheque).
- Tick Mark this payment as paid and click Save.
1 Type, 2 Related VAT Return, 3 Bank account, 4 Amount (AED), 5 Mark this payment as paid.
Verasol books the payment only when everything fits, and tells you what to correct otherwise:
- the return must be filed, and the payment dated on or after its filing date;
- the payment date cannot be in the future;
- the amount cannot be more than the return still leaves open. You can pay a return in several parts: Filed VAT returns then shows it as Partly paid.
What Verasol books#
A payment clears VAT Payable to FTA through your bank. For example, for the AED 35,550.10 paid on 21 July 2026 for the return of April to June 2026:
| Account | Debit | Credit |
|---|---|---|
| 2202 VAT Payable to FTA | 35,550.10 | |
| 1000-0001 Current Account (Emirates NBD) | 35,550.10 |
The credit goes to the ledger account of the bank account you chose, like any other payment from that bank.
Record a refund from the FTA#
When a return is refundable, the FTA owes you the difference. When the refund arrives, record it the same way with Type Refund from FTA, the refundable return and the bank account the money came into. The return must have a refund due, and the amount cannot be more than what is still due.
Verasol books it the other way round: debit your bank account, credit VAT Refundable from FTA.
Correct a payment#
- Edit changes a payment. When you change the amount, date, bank account, return or type of a paid one, Verasol reverses its entry and books it again with the new details.
- Mark as unpaid (reverses the entry) sets a paid payment back to pending and reverses its entry, for example when a payment was recorded by mistake.
- Delete removes a payment that is not paid. A paid one cannot be deleted: mark it as unpaid first.
